Building back better with community first

September 28 @ 10:15 am - 11:45 am UTC-7

Session Description:
With the reality of climate change and natural/human-caused disasters, how can we as housers, developers, designers, and planners engage communities to prepare for a resilient future and rebuild responsive to their collective vision. Building back better means building back more resiliently– starting with community. In this workshop, we’ll look at recent examples from the Rogue Valley — devastated by the Almeda Fire in September 2020. In Talent, city leaders, still healing from the loss, are investing in long-term development and rebuilding strategies that center the community first through engagement of a broad coalition of stakeholders. Community organizers and an affordable housing developer are building a resident-led coalition that will shape the first resident-owned community in Southern Oregon. We’ll also discuss takeaways from recent community engagement workshops, and talk about how this visioning informed site planning for two affordable housing developments and a new masterplan for downtown Talent.
